STM32WB05KN - Clarification of required testing?

We are considering using a WB05KN as a BLE coprocessor in an STM32H573 design.  I found the section in your wiki describing paths for Bluetooth certification.  It says that no testing is required if a precertified module is used, or the recommendations and layout in AN5526 have been followed to the letter.

Separately, all intentional radiators (in the US) must pass FCC testing, but if one uses a precertified wireless module and specified antenna, then the incorporating product can simply cite the certification of the wireless module.

I want to clarify… are these two sets of testing (Bluetooth qualification as discussed in the ST Wiki, and FCC intentional radiator testing) two different sets of testing entirely?  That is, if we do a chip-down WB05KN design according to AN5526, would we still have to do FCC intentional radiator testing, even though we would not need to perform Bluetooth certification testing?

If I’m understanding that correctly, is it then true that the only way to avoid FCC intentional radiator testing is to use a precertified module (i.e. no chip-down designs allowed)?  And if that’s the case, are there no pre-qualified modules available for the WB05 series?  (I can’t seem to find any.)  Thanks.

Hello Dana,

Let me try to clarify.

First, yes I do confirm no module is available for STM32WBA05KN.

Then, yes, we are talking about two different testing sets when talking about Bluetooth SIG qualification or FCC.

Wiki is mainly dealing about Bluetooth certification.
Goal of bluetooth certification is mainly to ensure your device respects Bluetooth requirements (so will be able to communicate properly in BLE and will not pollute or be polluted bu other BLE devices).
Bluetooth qualification consists in testing (tests are done only in conducted mode) and listing.
As stated in wiki, if using a module or if you strictly follows our ref design, testing may be not needed.
Listing has to be considered in any case.

Regional testing (FCC, RED CE etc) is different.
It is to ensure your device is compliant with regional radio requirements.
Regional testing are done both in conducted and radiated mode.
Using an integrated module will allow to avoid part of the testing (usually the one related to conducted mode).

Hope this clarifies.
Regards

Laurent
