Camera selection and interface

What is the easiest way to interface a camera.
AN5020 lists a number of camera sensors supported, however only the old OV2640 is included in the support packages.
The most complex issue is setting up the sensor registers - do the manufacturers supply a known working set ?
There seem to be two main manufacturers : onsemi and omnivision.
onsemi have a frame grabber and software to set it up - though its OTT and also looks a little incomplete regarding the range of sensors
Omnivision have yet to get back to me yet. There are evaluation kits available.but I don't know whats included, and I think some NDA type support is required.
Which is best for long term supply (product obsolesce) and lowest power do you think ?
My preffered choice for the moment is the MT9P031. Omni seem to be concentrating on MIPI interfaced devices.
