I have a STM32F429I-DISC1. When I power it on with a PC everything works fine but when I use a external power supply the board stays in reset mode. I updated STMCubeMX to the newest firmware STM32Cube FW_F4 V1.16.0 but it still doesn't work.

Is this the correct way to update the firmware of my discovery board?

Ok now I got it. I downloaded the st-link Upgrade tool, put the discovery board in st-link mode and updated the firmware. It works now with the firmware package: V2.J28.M18 STM32 Debug+Mass storage

Yes, the ST-LINK mbed firmware when the DISC1 series boards were first released had this odd behaviour, several complaints and it was fixed in subsequent firmwares.
