On the other hand, having the MAC+PHY integrated probably makes the TI (formerly Luminary) parts too expensive where not required...

Hi everybody!

is ST planing a STM32 processor with an integrated ethernet PHY+MAC??? I ask you because I think that the STM32 is a little too expensive vs. the Cortex M3 processors of Luminary if you want to use ethernet.

Example (prices are from Digikey):

STM32F107RBT6 -> 12.19 USD

DP83848CVV-ND -> 5.40 USD

LM3S6918-IQC50 -> 11.52 USD

Absolutely!

In the end, as always, it's all about tradeoffs - no one manufacturer can ever hope to produce so many variations that they have a chip to match each and every individual application's set of specific requirements...

But the advantage of Cortex-M3 is that it's a standard architecture - so you shouldn't have too much difficulty using STM32s where they fit best, and Stellaris where they fit best, and LPC17xx where they fit best, etc, etc,... 8-)

Hello,

I asked ST the same question, and the explanation i got was they want to keep the power consumption low, and that was difficult with build in PHY.

Another good thing about external PHY is WLAN can be used as well.

But i like to see one with internal PHY as well, i think it will be a nice ''single'' chip solution

st7, you can see that TI is slightly cheaper than STM32F107 anyway.

On the other hand:

- is DP83848 only ethernet PHY on the market? You can find cheaper parts.

- this is price for only 1 psc.
