Generally you want them to be robust and fault tolerant, TI has a host of solutions. Do you need it to be 802.3af/at compliant, or you just want to push power over the cable. There are solutions which just push DC over the unused pairs, and crude implementations pretty much just use a regulator at the peripheral end.
