Position acquisition

Hi.

Is there some technique (maybe some kind of MEMS) to determine relative position with 1mm precision in 2 m range? For example moving sensor is located on my palm and the reference point is located on my chest or waist.

    Something with 1mm in the consumer space seems a bit implausible. Radio, video or IMU would need a lot of precision.

    You might look at time-of-flight type sensors (low cost version of LIDAR).  These range a distance by measuring how long it takes for a beam of light to reflect from a target.  For short distances backscatter isn't significant but you do have to watch out for outside sources of light at the same frequency.

    In cell phones time-of-flight can be used to determine how far away an object (i.e. your head) is from the phone, and dim the screen backlight if you are holding it up to the side of your head.

    At one time Polaroid made short range sonar rangers using ultrasonic but I'm not sure if anyone makes something similar today.
