Question

MEMS Oscillator for STM32U585RIT3Q

Hi team,

We are using STM32U585RIT3Q on our board, as this will be used in an environment which is prone to vibration, we are planning to use MEMS oscillator for the clock input at the OSC_IN pin instead of a crystal. We are planning to use either ASVMB-16.000MHZ-XY-T or SIT8918AA-11-33S-16.000000G. Please confirm if either of these parts are suitable for STM32U585RIT3Q. Also how to connect the oscillator to the MCU and what should be the configuration for OSC_OUT.

Hello @suhas.m and welcome to the ST community,

MEMS oscillators are compatible with STM32 except for old STM32 part numbers such as STM32F1 and STM32L1 according to the AN2867:

With ASVMB-16.000MHZ-XY-T and U5 product you need to configure the HSE/LSE in Bypass mode.

OSC_OUT could be used as a normal GPIO.

Application note AN2867 Guidelines for oscillator design on STM8AF/AL/S and STM32 MCUs/MPUs includes guidance on MEMs oscillators.

See also AN5373, Getting started with STM32U5 MCU hardware development.

And, of course, the STM32U585RIT3Q datasheet.

Please confirm if either of these parts are suitable for STM32U585RIT3Q

As when connecting anything to a microcontroller:

  1. Look at the microcontroller's datasheet to find its input requirements
  2.  Look at the oscillator's datasheet to find its output specifications
  3. Check if they match.

A complex system that works is invariably found to have evolved from a simple system that worked.A complex system designed from scratch never works and cannot be patched up to make it work.
