Is there any documentation for the STM32L496 HAL library as a downloadble extra?

The current HAL driver documentation does not have a user manual for the L496 chips. The only ones I can see are

• STM32L4A6xx
• STM32L443xx
• STM32L462xx
• STM32L486xx

I have V1.8.1 of the Cube library.

Is there maybe a separate link that contains the help file or am I on my own in deciphering any modules that are not in the above help.

Choose the exact type of your MCU  and inside the redirected page will find full documentation and a lot of other resources relevant to your MCU (the datasheet is at top of page)

Isn't the L4A6 just an L496 with AES (CRYPT) enabled? These parts are more similar than they are different. Pull the data sheet for pins/connectivity.
