How to stack IHM03A demo boards?

The 'Quick start guide' for STEP01 demo boards says you can stack up to three boards and explains how to set the link resistors to daisy-chain the SPI comms. Fine, but that still leaves all the boards connected to the same step pin on the Nucleo so all steppers will move exactly the same !
How much use is that?
The L6474 boards has other links that allowed connection of each step to a different IO on the nucleo. The meant you could actually USE it.
Is there some detail I'm over looking or do I really have to start bending legs and bodging ad hoc soldered links everywhere? Thanks for any clarifications.
