externally triggered output compare

I am using an STM32F4 discovery board.  I want to use an external trigger to generate an interrupt that will cause a pulse stream.  I have found examples using an external trigger for one pulse mode as well as output compare examples that generate pulses.  I am struggling to figure out how combine these two concepts....

    TIM1 and 8 should allow multiple pulse trains with PWM and Repetition Count (8-bit), ie frequency, duty, and cycles
