2019 STM32 Wish List

Dear Community Members & STM32 fans,

Let’s end 2018 thanking you for your involvement in our Community and wishing you all the best for 2019!

0690X000006CwKbQAK.jpg

As already done in 2017 (https://community.st.com/s/feed/0D50X00009bLPmvSAG) and in 2018 (https://community.st.com/s/feed/0D50X00009bLSAKSA4), we open this space to hear from you.

This is an opportunity for us to evaluate what we deliver as offer and to know your expectations.

If we come back to the STM32 portfolio end of last year, it was like this:

Now the image is getting larger with new products as well as ecosystem components:

Compared to the wishes you shared previous years, we weren’t able to answer all proposals for sure, but may be some of our solutions met what you looked for. Like for example: delivering .ioc file in the STM32Cube package which we started with STM32G0...

Either you are a follower of the STM32 history as well as the Community updates, or a new member in this space, would you mind share with us your feedback answering the following 3 questions:

  • What shouldn’t be done (don’t say migration to new Community platform or new CubeMX interface (because both of them will be improved)?
  • What you appreciate the most as STM32 related offer?
  • What do you expect/suggest related to the STM32 and its ecosystem?

All together, keep UP our STM32 Community!

    Dear All,

Instead of creating 2020 wishlist and in order to better handle your proposals, we suggest the "Ideas zone" that you can see from navigational bar.

You find more details on how to use it in "Announcing Idea Zone!".

Don't hesitate to submit your STM32 related ideas there and attach them to relevant categories!

Here's another wish: better forum software.

The software that runs this forum is just horrific. It's the worst I've ever used. I recommend that ST replace it with something better--there are many choices out there. Either migrate the posts from this forum to the new software, or make this site a read-only archive for people who want to read old posts.

    Hello @jerry2 ,

We have already several improvements on the pipe regarding the community platform.

But it is interesting for us to hear from you: what is going wrong from your point of view? What problems are you facing that lead to such proposal?

    Thanks

    Amel

My biggest issues with this forum relate to page navigation. A good case in point is this post. It currently has 136 individual posts, with the newest at the bottom. To get to the bottom to see the latest posts requires scrolling down to the bottom of the page and clicking on the "More Answers" link something like seven or eight times. Why not display all of the posts on a single page, or have a list of pages that can be selected as desired, so that I can easily go to the latest replies without having to scroll through the ones I've already read.

The same applies to browsing the list of articles in the forum. At the bottom of every page there's a "More" link that adds more posts to the screen. There's no way to skip pages or go directly to a given page. Another very annoying thing about browsing this forum backwards in time is if instead of opening a post on a new tab I accidentally open it up on the same tab, when I go back I'm right back at the top of the forum and have to click the "More" button many more times to get back to where I was.

All of this is very annoying. If there's a way to configure user profiles to make navigation and browsing more logical, I'd love to hear it. Other forums I frequent have much better software that makes navigation and viewing posts a much simpler and enjoyable process.

Better support for older programmers (those using arm-gcc cross-compilers, vim/ctags/cscope and make/game). Ie: provide linker scripts and makefiles with example softwares.

    Please continue supporting STLink-Utility.

There are many reasons for this.

It sure has its quirks and errors, but is a relatively mature and stable program.

Other reason is, that it's conservative user interface is much more usable and learnable than the funky and surprising "modern look and feel" of the CubeProgrammer.

Other is support of STLink-V1, which is not supported in CubeProgrammer. STLink-V1 among other things is part of https://www.st.com/en/evaluation-tools/stm32vldiscovery.html , which is an active product widely available at the distributors, and also in large number on users' shells.

Add full bare-metal support for the STM32MP1. Some of us need far more raw processing power than the H7 series offers, especially for DSP work, but don't need anything that Linux gives us as that sort of stuff is handled on another processor. All we need is a SPI port, an external memory port and 2, 4 or even more GHz A series cores running in 64 bit mode. I know you can use things like isolcpu but that still leaves one core being crippled by unnecessary overhead.

Completely re do the entire forum back to being usable which means current forum software as it just piece of crap! What utter piece of bull crap this forum format/software have become! Nothing works compared to the original forum back in 2007 who was splendid!

Other then that better support for STLink and H7 in tiny low pincount packages abandonment of internal flash for QSPI and larger internal SRAM

and more then 256MB in memory mapped mode, support for QSPI RAM and SDRAM.

STM32H7 should be pin compatible version of STM32F777 and STM32F479 with BGA216.

Or there should be an H4 running @ 400 Mhz.

    An STM equivalent to this

    https://www.nxp.com/products/processors-and-microcontrollers/arm-microcontrollers/i.mx-rt-series/i.mx-rt1010-crossover-mcu-with-arm-cortex-m7-core:i.MX-RT1010

M7 core with the current audio interfaces including SPDIF and the PLLs which are far better than the NXP ones, but in a lower cost smaller package like this one. Doesn't really need to be a $1, $2 would be fine but key for me is a smaller package.

    No 2020 wish list ?

Last year's one is too long to be practical ...

Here's an idea: can you add a feature to STM32CubeMX, in the Pinout view, to show the chip logo in the correct orientation with respect to pin 1?

For instance, the STM32F407 chip in 100 LQFP, with the logo and writing upright, has pin 1 in the bottom left corner. But if you look at it in STM32CubeMX, with the logo and writing upright, has pin 1 in the top left. The writing is rotated 90 degrees with respect to pin 1.

Going to the datasheet for that part, shows the location of pin 1, and the orientation of the logo and writing, being in the bottom left.

And before you say that pin1 is pin 1 and the logo and writing are in arbitrary orientations, the datasheet (DM00037051) shows the position of pin 1 but does not mention the existence of an ejector hole. But on the chip, the ejector hole does exist, so you have to use the logo and writing to identify which of the two dents indicates pin 1.

    Thus ends today's sermon,
