Question

Nucleo-C092RC No ST-LINK detected

Hi I have been at this for a couple of hours and I cannot figure out how to upload a program onto my Nucleo-C092RC that I bought from Digikey. I am using the STM32Cube IDE v2.20 on a Windows 11 PC, as well as the CubeProgrammer and CubeMX

I have followed the tutorial from this video to create a simple Blink LED example:

When I got to the stage where I go into debug mode and upload the code to my C092RC I get the error “No ST-LINK detected. Please connect ST-LINK and restart the debug session”. I have gone through the below help article as well as suggestions from the STM32 sidekick and have been unsuccessful so far.  The only thing I haven't tried from the below help article is the Mass erase MCU

In device manager I see both “STMicroelectronics STLink Virtual COM Port” under Ports (COM & LPT) and I see “ST-Link Debug” under Universal Serial Bus devices. When I connect to the C092RC directly via USB from my PC I see the green power LED LD3, the solid red LD4, and LD1 and LD2 are alternating. I am fairly certain that I have the correct jumpers in place (I didnt move any of them since unboxing). From what I can tell I shouldn't need one of the programming dongles (ST-LINK/V2).

I have tried re-updating the ST-Link drivers as suggested by the STM32 sidekick but none of the solutions seemed to have worked. I CAN successfully connect to the board using the STM32CubeProgrammer. When I connect the LD4 flashes red/green and then is solid green for a few seconds.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If the st-link is being used by something else, you’ll get this error. Since it can connect via STM32CubeProgrammer, there is nothing wrong with the setup. Is it possible you’re already connected with STM32CubeProgrammer when trying to debug?

Try erasing the flash with STM32CubeProgrammer, disconnecting, and then trying to flash via STM32CubeIDE.

Also ensure you are not calling out a specific st-link serial number in the debug configuration properties.

Hello @TylerThomson and welcome to the ST community,

Forget about the tutorial for the moment and try one of the examples provided in the Cube HAL over this link:

https://www.st.com/en/embedded-software/stm32cubec0.html

Use the simplest example available. For example the GPIO toggle located under STM32CubeC0/Projects/NUCLEO-C092RC/Examples/GPIO

If it works that means there is an issue in the steps you followed from the tutorial. Otherwise, try to use another USB data cable or try the same test on another PC.

Thank you both for the replies!

One odd thing Ive noticed is that nothing happens when press the reset button while holding down the boot mode button, it just resets like normal and resets the pre-loaded program. I tried a few different USB ports on my PC, and I tried using my laptop and got the exact same results. Ive also ordered a new data usbc cable from amazon to rule out the cable.

@mƎALLEm I loaded up that example using the getting started guide from that link (UM2985). I was able to build the project just fine but when I hit debug it gave me the same error.

@TDK  I am not connected on STM32CubeProgrammer when I attempted Meallems suggestion. I did it with a fresh boot and only opened STM32CubeIDE. I have attached a picture of the debug configuration properties. I have messed with these a little bit but it hasn't made any difference. After trying Meallems suggestion I was able to connect to the board in STM32CubeProgrammer and I did a full chip erase which was sucsessful. I then disconnected and closed CubeProgrammer and re-tried Meallems suggestion and got the same No ST-LINK error. The program that was on the board when it shipped is now wiped as LD1 and LD2 are no longer alternating.

If you check the ‘ST-LINK S/N’ box, and then press ‘Scan’ - does it find a serial number ?

How, exactly, do you start the debug session ?

What do you see in the ‘Console’ ?

(you can copy & paste from the Console)

A complex system that works is invariably found to have evolved from a simple system that worked.A complex system designed from scratch never works and cannot be patched up to make it work.

Just for fun: try other debug, see settings  - >

@AScha.3 Thanks for the suggestion. I tried the OpenOCD method and got the same No ST-LINK detected error. I tried different reset modes and it didnt make any difference

I tried Help->ST-LINK upgrade and successfully changed from STM32 Debug+VCP to  STM32 Debug+VCP+Mass Storage then back again. Both versions were V2J48M35. It seems like I am able to freely communicate with the board, except when I try to use the IDE debug.

Oh, so it might be something in Windows , about “rights” or virus protection .

Check rights and anti-virus and switch off everything...then try again.
