Do I need TCPP01-M12 if I use USB Type-C™ at 5V only?
Consider that a defective or low-quality charger or cable is connected to your sink application and provides a voltage higher than negotiated, even if your sink application requests only 5V.
Actually, this threat is applicable regardless of your application’s voltage. The only way to protect your sink application is:
- Either the absolute maximum rating (AMR) of the VIN pin of the sink power management (LDO, DC-DC, battery charger IC, etc.) is higher than the maximum voltage delivered by a defective charger (for example, 22V). In this case, your sink application is safe.
- Or you can choose a low-voltage power management (for better performance or power consumption reasons) and add an overvoltage protection (OVP) IC on the VBUS line.
On a single chip, the TCPP01-M12 integrates over-voltage protection on the VBUS line and ESD protection on CC lines, saving you both PCB space and costs compared to an equivalent discrete solution.
