how can i power up stm32f407vg discovery with external power souce?

hi,

i recently got stm32f407vg-disc1(discovery) and started a project.

i want to power up the board with external battery(5.1v, 2.4a) through micro-usb port(cn5) but it's not working at all.

it's working fine when i plug it with PC.

my english is not that good so i'm having a hard time understanding a datasheet.

any suggestions?

The microUSB on that board is an OTG port. It is meant to power a slave device and not power the board. There is a power switch on the board. The CPU controls it and this allows the CPU to decide wether or not to power the USB slave connected there... In theory you could sabotage that power switch and power the board the way you want. The other options are to feed the 5V (or 5.1V, that is fine) into the mini USB connector, or use one of the 5V pins on the board.

Review the connectivity on the schematic.

I've tended to power STM32F4-DISCO board via a 'Juice Box' type battery connected to the Mini USB (CN1)

Make sure you have the most current firmware on the DISC1 boards, there were issues with just powering it without a PC interacting, that held the STM32F4 in reset. Download current ST-LINK Utilities, and update the board with that.

PLEASE give more information - I have the same question. You have an answer that promises to be an answer, but gives a vague 'update your firmware'. Please give links and other information. I have spent hours trying to find this magical firmware, but to no avail.

The 30 second answers can help one 'knock off' the list of questions, but in a useless manner. By providing links to the information, the answer is clear.

Example. Use the current ST-LINK utilities, which can be found here

Then you're doing search entirely wrong. I'm an engineer not a baby sitter.

Decide if it takes 30 seconds or hours, there are some orders of magnitude at work there, and usable answers dropped out of Google immediately. Likely less time that it took to dig up this thread, and complain about things.
