Transistors based on planar technology are primarily suitable for applications with linear control such as yours. However, the STW3N170 is manufactured using MESH technology, which, due to its structure, is targeted for switching applications. If this transistor is nevertheless operated in the linear region, there is a significant risk of hotspots forming in the MESH structure, which will lead to avalanche-like destruction of the transistor.
