IGBT gate resistance value calculation.

Q1. How to calculate IGBT gate resistance.

I want to use STGD18N40LZ IGBT for operating an inductive switching load.

Switching freq:- Between 400Hz to 1Khz

Collector to Emitter voltage:- 24V.

Avg Max current :- 5A.

Q2. What will be impact If I use 1Kohm resistance?

The STGD18N40LZ already contains a built-in gate resistance of typ. 1.6kohms.

By the way: because of the conduction losses it doesn't really make sense to operate a 360V IGBT with 24V, a MOSFET can do better.

    Good luck!

    Thanks for response.

If I choose MOSFET to drive it by 5V at 5A in D2pak.

Does it less costly with IGBT.

    Application :- Automotive, 12 V battery system.

An IGBT does not make sense at 12V because its collector-emitter saturation voltage is relatively high and would generate high power dissipation.

On the other hand, we cannot recommend a specific device without knowing the environment, like driving parameters, type of load, etc.
