What are the properties of your inductor? I faced a similar problem. My design limits current (stops generating pulses) with a load of about 2A. Think it goes into hiccup mode, but its peak current is much lower than 6.2A noted in datasheet. Maybe it is an overtemperature shutdown, but the temperature of the chip never exceeded 60...
