How can I troubleshoot a USB device that is not detected

I am troubleshooting a USB device that is not being detected by my computer. What are the main hardware and software checks I should perform to determine whether the problem is related to the USB connection, drivers, or the device itself?

Are you talking about you don’t hear it enumerate and connect to computer or you don’t see the device in the Device Manager?

The enumeration is started by the host, as soon as he gets a voltage on a data line from the device.

So check cables and plug first, try a working device there to prove it can work on this cable and connector.

Then check: is your device pulling up the D+ line? Try 1k5 to 3v3 as pullup, the host should begin enumeration and then tell about unknown or defective device connected.

So you can check for connecting and enumeration. All that happens then depends on a working software on the device as it has to answer now the host for a working enumeration.
