The register sets of st's 6d accelerometers lsm6dsl and ism330dhc differ substantially. Is there a library or hardware abstraction layer which allows to program and read out sensor data independently of the above mentioned type?

Not sure about what you are exactly requiring, but you could refer to:

• Github repository for the C drivers of both sensors: lsm6dsl_reg.c and ism330dhcx_reg.c
• FP-SNS-ALLMEMS1 package, where a series of sensors is implemented specifically for STM32 MCUs.
