VL53L9CX: plans for an official ROS 2/Linux driver?
Hi all,
I'm evaluating the VL53L9CX and want to use it with ROS 2 on a Linux host.
What I've found so far:
- ST's software for this sensor seems to be aimed at STM32 (X-CUBE-53L9A1, UM3656, and the programming guide UM3683).
- I couldn't find an official Linux driver or ROS 2 package.
- The only working ROS 2 route I've found is a community project that uses an ESP32-P4 as a MIPI CSI-2 to USB bridge and publishes a PointCloud2: https://github.com/kamibukuro5656/VL53L9CX_ESP32-P4_USB_ROS2
- There's also a basic Raspberry Pi implementation over I2C from another user on this forum (thread: "VL53L9 working Linux implementation").
Questions for ST:
1. Is an official ROS 2 driver (sensor_msgs/PointCloud2) planned for the VL53L9CX, and is there a rough timeframe?
2. Is an official Linux driver planned, for example a V4L2/MIPI CSI-2 or I3C capture path for hosts like Raspberry Pi or Jetson?
3. In the meantime, can the post-processing library (confidence, radial-to-perpendicular conversion, flying-pixel filter) be used on a Linux host, and under what licence terms?
4. Is there a roadmap or announcement page I should follow?
If anyone else is working on this, I'd be glad to hear how far you've got.
Thanks!
