VL53L8CX – Firmware Update Support and Procedure

Hello ST Team,

We are using the VL53L8CX (VL53L8CXV9GC/1) ToF sensor with an NXP i.MX8MP running Linux over I²C.

We understand that the VL53L8CX has an internal MCU

We would like to clarify:

  1. Does ST provide firmware updates/releases for the VL53L8CX?

  2. If yes, how can we obtain the latest compatible firmware?

  3. What is the recommended procedure to update/load the sensor firmware from a Linux host?

  4. Does ST provide any recommended firmware version-check or firmware update API for production devices?

    Please provide the recommended procedure, documentation, and any required ST software package/API.

    Thanks.

Hi,

See this page below:

https://www.st.com/en/embedded-software/stsw-img042.html

The VL53L8CX, it does not have flash memory so the firmware is loaded onto the chip at init. Therefore keeping the driver updated in turn should keep the firmware at its latest (confirmed in the user manual)

vl53l8cx_init()

User manual: https://www.st.com/resource/en/user_manual/um3109-a-guide-for-using-the-vl53l8cx-lowpower-highperformance-timeofflight-multizone-ranging-sensor-stmicroelectronics.pdf

I believe this is the version check:

vl53l8cx_get_version()

I used this sensor a few years ago so everything is a little foggy but i hope this helps!
