Question

Allow dislike

I suggest to allow like and dislike votes. Dislike is important to indicate that the post contains wrong/weird information or working but not good technical decision. This is how best practices work.

The trouble with this is that it can (and does) get abused; eg, as a grudge against the poster - rather than a comment on the content.

Also, just a “dislike” doesn’t tell what is wrong with the content.

Probably best to address that in a reply ?

A complex system that works is invariably found to have evolved from a simple system that worked.A complex system designed from scratch never works and cannot be patched up to make it work.

  • I generally agree with allowing dislike buttons, but I don’t think the ST forum is the right place for it.
  • On social media you want to rate public posts/videos and individual comments and look at the ratio.
  • Here I occasionally upvote a comment when a user has a good idea or the same problem to highlight that comment. And I never had the desire to downvote.
  • ST forum posts don’t get many views on average, so the ratio becomes unreliable anyway
  • If the post is in violation of the terms it should be reported.
  • If you disagree with the contents you can just reply and explain why you disagree.
  • Even stackoverflow encourages adding a comment under a question or an answer before downvoting.
  • The previous forum didn’t have a dislike feature either. If it was and it was used heavily I’d understand the reason to preserve it.
