I2C HAL is being stuck at HAL_BUSY. Can you take a look?

I don't know much about HAL, but I had a serious problem with the I2C peripheral locking up like this a few years ago. I never got to the bottom of it, but found some hints that all is not well with the silicon (I don't know the truth of this). The result, rightly or not, is that I always bit bang I2C.
