Changing TIM Capture Copare Mode Register on the run

although I was reading through the referrence manual, I couldn´t find the answer to my question: Does anyone know when changes of the TIM CCMR ( Timer Capture Compare Mode Register) are taken into account?

For example, if I want to change from PWM1 to Toggle mode in the loop, is this taken into account emidiately? Or for example after an update event?
How "safe" is it, to change the values on the fly?

I´m using the SMT32F429.

Thank you very much!
