i have interfaced AT45DB161. i hv attached the code files (Read/ Write/ Device ID read functions) that might be helpful. change the PIN No.s

pullups are a not a problem. 

tell me if u need more help.

Were you able to run on SPI1 PB3 - PB5?

On what part? On the F1 for instance you have to move the JTAG/SWD function off the pins.
