Clarication of settings in CubeMX CAN mode needed

We are studying the STM32F042x chip because it is cheap. We hope to use it with CAN bus. There is Master mode setting in the Cube tool. What I know about CAN bus, it is a multimaster bus. Every device can be a master. So that ''master'' does not make sense.
I looked at F207 device, it has a slave or master setting. Is a slave CAN bus device a some kind passive bus spy, or what.
