SPV1040 Question

I have a solar panel the generates about 5V @ 200mA, trying to use the solar panel (5V/200mA) and charge a single cell lithium battery with a capacity of 5000mA. Can the SPV1040 device handle this task? Thank you.

Yes, you can do that. Please ensure that your solar panel does not deliver more than the maximum input voltage of the SPV1040 of 5.5 V.

One example could be the AN4050, which shows a high efficiency solar battery charger with embedded MPPT.

so it needs to be combined with L6924D? 

Well, you didn't specify the type of the battery yet. If we are talking about a single lithium cell rather than a lithium battery pack you should do it exactly that way, i.e. SPV1040 is supplying the constant voltage to the load plus a battery charger device such as the L6924D.

Page 13 of the app note you referenced shows that SPV1040 pin 3 is not connected to the inductor? doesn't it need the inductor to be in boost mode? 

maybe I am missing something?

Well, fig. 17 shows to the solar power optimizer section only, but it also mentions the connection to the boost inductor at pin 3 (LX_1040).

Please, can you explain why SPV1040T alone can't do the job for a single lithium cell?

The SPV1040T provides a fixed voltage that can be used for e.g. supercapacitors, lead-acid batteries and perhaps for simple LiFePO4 applications. LiIO or LiPo require a charge controller, which must therefore be connected externally.

Thanks for your answer.

But section 6.3 and 6.4 deal with constant current and constant voltage which is what is needed for lipo charging.

Why is me interpretation wrong?
