The quick answer is that you can use Glass, Acrylic or PMMA or polycarbonate.

But a more complete answer would include the qualities of a good coverglass.

A qualities that make a good coverglass are:

  • •Clear – transparent to 940nm light.
  • •Glass, Acrylic, PMMA and polycarbonate (PC) are good choices.
  • •Close – The closer the glass is to the sensor the better.
  • •Try for an air gap of less than 1mm.
  • •Parallel – try to keep the glass parallel to the sensor
  • •Thin – The thinner the better.
  • •1mm is a good thickness.
  • •Smooth – the texture of the glass should be flat as possible - haze
  • •Clean – Fingerprints and dirt will make things difficult.
  • •Consistent – Glass quality and air gaps should be consistent.

I’ve never seen a customer get all of these right, but try. All these qualities are additive, so you can get a couple of the 'wrong', but they add up.

You can also buy a coverglass from a company called Hornix in Tiawan.

Or from:

I've had success with microscope glass slides. The ones I use are made from "plastic".

Microscope coverslips make good coverglasses. And the acrylic ones work well.

But be just a touch careful. I saw some cheap ones on Amazon - but they said the thickness is betweeen 0.17 and 0.25mm and they are vinyl. (Technically this is PVC - and not a great choice.)

So if you are just doing a few that's fine, but to really handle the crosstalk you want better consistancy than that. More expensive ones from:

https://us.vwr.com/store/product/4646038/vwr-micro-slides-and-coverslips-plastic

have better uniformity - between 0.45 and 0.50. But they are kind of expensive.

I suspect the expensive ones are of better optical quality as well.

For that kind of money you could buy the ones from www.hornix.com.tw and those are made specifically for the VL53 sensors.
