STICK programming tool

I have noticed some very strange behaviour of my ST STICK programming tool. I also use ST Visual Programmer software (Jun 8 2007 Edition).

I can always program ST72F264G2 device with 4MHz crystal normaly (in ICP mode). But if I replace the crystal with 8MHz or 16MHz the device is not recognized in any way.

I checked the following. I program the device with 4MHz crystal inserted and after that I replace the crystal with 8MHz. Program runs (with double speed). But STICK is not able to communicate with it (message Wrong device selected appears).

what is the reason and what can I do?

OK, problem solved.

I don't know why but solution is the following.

I have connected OSC pin 9 on ICC connector to OSC1 pin on microcontroller. Then I have selected ICP OPT Disable configuration on my programming tool. So now I am able to programm device with any value of crystal inserted.
