L6472 Current Setup

I use the L6472 with step / direction inputs. Can I write to register 9 (TVAL_HOLD) at any time? I am polling the position counter to determine when the motor didn't move for a while. Then I switch from normal to standby current. Observation: sometimes during this transition the current regulation becomes unstable and OCD trips.

Maybe after it trips read the Tval register to see if noise spi  affected the data you sent.  I plan on doing the same thing, to set it to 50% standby current when the motor is stopped. Im  using the L6474 and monitoring the step signal with the mpu.

How hot does your L6424 run ?  Mine gets up to 75 deg C while holding at just 1.25 amps.  When its spinning, it runs a bit cooler in the 50C range.
