DAC as internal reference only

Does anyone know if it's possible to enable the DAC without having it drive the corresponding output pin (PA4 on STM32F301 in my case)? I want to use it as a reference for the internal comparator, but unfortunately PA4 is connected to ground on my target hardware.

If not, will it still work having the DAC output pin shorted to ground (I'm guessing the tap point for the internal comparator reference is before the pin driver).

I don't know about the STM32F301, but for STM32F334 the answer is yes. In fact the STM32F3348 discovery board uses exactly this function with the DAC as internal reference for the comparator only, and not connected to the pin at all.
