Transparent object range measurement

When I measure range of a transparent object like glass or acrylic, with a near background, the sensor measure the background instead of the object.

Is there some setting I can use to handle this? may be something to do with the crosstalk setting?

Sincerely,

Heri

Hello Heri,

As the VL6180X device uses a focused laser beam for its light source, it will trasmit fairly easily through clear glass or plastic. The plastic will allow some light to bounce back into the sensor, however, this will be minimal compared to a piece of material located at the back of your clear plastic. If you want to see the effect of your plastic on the signal return, remove the piece of material from the back of the plastic. The return signal rate without this material will be the return signal from the plastic. To get this return signal rate, read RESULT__RANGE_RETURN_RATE, register 0x0066.

If you want to detect how far a piece of plastic is away from the VL6180X, consider using opaque plastic that will allow the photons to bounce back into the sensor and report a distance.

Thanks,

Colin
