SPWF01 recommended for new designs?

Hi Jerry,

is the SPWF01 recommended for new designs? Do you have planned any firmware updates for future?

Since the SPWF01 will not support IPv6, but the SPWF04 do, I don't see any reason to use the SPWF01 in the future. Or is there any reason to use the SPWF01 instead of the SPWF04?

Thx & regards,

Flow

Ciao,

- OTA requires a temporary storage area, provided by embedded (04) or extended (01.11) devices. If not required, use 01.21;

- 04 biggest advantage is the possibility to work without an external MCU. Host-less mode, powered by MicroPython engine.

Most customers don't need IPv6, OTA, WPS, etc. They develop higher level protocols using raw sockets. In this case, use 01.21.

Hi Flow,

SPWF01 is still recommended for new designs. SPWF04 is new, is more powerful, and probably (expected!) is more expensive.

From every point if view (bottom-up), we have: SPWF01Sx.21 (w/o extra flash), SPWF01Sx.11 (w/ extra flash), and SPWF04Sx (top level). They cover different use cases:

- if you don't need OTA, will never use 01.11 & 04

- if you don't need WPS, will never use 01.11 and 01.21

- if you want to keep external MCU, will never use 04

Obviously, using SPWF04 you have everything! But, if you don't want to pay for something that will be never used, SPWF01 is still there. And, yes, an update is in roadmap to cover new needs from the cloud.

Anyway, in my point of view, a big plus is provided by WPS and WPA-Enterprise, more than IPv6...

Ciao

Hi Jerry,

thank you very much for your detailed answer.

Some questions:

- if you don't need OTA, will never use 01.11 & 04

In the SPWF04 data sheet is the feature OTA listetd.

- if you want to keep external MCU, will never use 04

Why should I never use the SPWF04 if I have an external MCU?

Thx.

Cheers,

Flow

Hi Gerardo,

We have a customer using

SPWF04 recently and found this module when running at standby mode would draw around >1mA current rather than uA level mentioned in the datasheet. They were using SPWF01 before and did not see this problem. May I know if SPWF04 could be a compatible replacement for SPWF01, any notice/tips for Hardware redesign or AT comment settings? Thanks.

No, it is...
