L6472 Stepper Driver Layout Question

I notice that the EVAL6472 is a 4 layer PCB.  Similarly, sparkfun has an evaluation board for the L6470 that is also a 4 layer PCB.  My question:  Is there some significance or layout best practice that requires a 4 layer PCB with the L6472 device?  Would you foresee any issues if I roll my own L6472 stepper driver board using a 2 layer PCB?

I don't know the motivations of Sparkfun team, but the EVAL6472H from ST had been developed using 4 layer PCB in order to obtain the maximum thermal performance.

The device can be also routed on two layer PCBs like, for example, in the
