have I understood the operation of L298 correctly?

Hi,

I'm building a fairly simple stepper motor driver, and I'm thinking of using the L298.

Due to the quite high pricing of L297 I'm not able to use it, but I have created a state-machine whos outputs give the same pattern as the L297. (in full step mode)(1001, 1010, 0110, 0101) Will it work if I connect my state-machine the same way that I would connect a L297?

Also, the sense ports, do i need to use them as im not using micro step?

L297 integrates a state machine and a PWM current regulator. L298 can drive a stepper motor with your state machine but cannot control the current (the full supply voltage will be applied to the motor windings according to the pattern generated by the state machine). The L297 PWM circuitry allows controlling the motor current (through the sense pins of L298) to a fixed value and gives torque and speed advantages (see

Please consider L6208 (http://www.st.com/stonline/products/literature/ds/7514.pdf) integrates power stage, PWM control and state machine plus additional protection features etc. in a single chip.
