The release to market of the VIPer25,26 (available soon),27, and 28 of the VIPerPlus family of Off Line High Voltage converters complements the previously released VIPer15,16,17 devices.

Fabrizio,

I am working a circuit using VIPER53E parts, and I need some technical help in getting the breadboard going. My application is to develop this power supply at 300KHz (see attached Viper file), but evertime I put the input DC voltage to about 120V, the front end blows and I burn up the Viper53 chip. I need some help in understanding this chip's operation and what I am doing wrong in the breadboard stage.

Got to go, please email me with an idea or some technical material on how the Viper53E chip works. I need this ASAP.

Hi Dave,

Just to understand:

When you mean breadboarding an SMPS, do you have a proper PCB? I am assuming you do or it will not work

Second, try putting a 60/100W domestic incandescent light bulb in series with the input. This will limit the current and you will not blow off the Viper53 easily. If something is wrong, the bulb will keep on glowing brilliantly even at no o/p load and you can quickly switch off the input supply!

 And ramp up the input 120 Volts using a variac or something while monitoring the drain voltage w/form just after the UVLO threshold has crossed. Do not apply it in full. You should see oscillations starting.

Are the transfomer  winding phasing maintained as it should be for a flyback?
