Thank you very much to ST OnlineSupport for their very fast response. This is what they answered:

'' The ID Code for uPSD321x-uPSD323x is 08140047 (with 8KB SRAM)

The ID Code for uPSD325x is 08540047 (with 32KB SRAM)

Since the programmer is reading ID code 08140047, that means the device is a uPSD321x or uPSD323x with 8KB SRAM, and therefore cannot replace the uPSD3253, which has 32KB SRAM.

Changing the ID code in the .jcf file will not fix the problem as this design/application requires 32KB of SRAM. You need a uPSD3253B or a uPSD3254B. ''

The device we tested were marked as uPSD3253B. Caveat emptor.
