I'm not sure I want to dig through all the register level stuff, that's why I use the library.

Consider for a moment what the level conversion circuit is doing, if for example it could back-drive the STM32's output, and how it's implemented. The problem sounds more electrical than software.

Consider if you have a common and effective ground.

Thank you for the answer and suggestion, I will check once again the ground.
