VL53L1 underwater use / experiences?

I understand the older vl6180x works underwater, but I could not find any information regarding the VL53L1. Anyone tried it? If so, how well does it work?

I'm looking mainly for proximity detection / distance measurement, but limited gesture/ motion detection would be a neat bonus.

The parts themselves have to be protected from the environment. But to a certain extent the light does go through water. Actually water absorbs 940nm light, so the max distance for the VL53L0x and VL53L1x will be cut down. But the max range is 2meters and 4 meters respectively. So please go ahead and try it. If you account for the speed of light through water, you should get a fine answer.
